Below are explanations for the six "blue screens" that appeared in Season 2 Episode 18 “All In”.

Key

The glitches are in Hex coded ASCII with Greek symbols as usual. However, this time it is a double encryption. Once the hex code substitution has been deciphered, one must additionally decode it through Base64.

  • a == Pi (Π)
  • b == Gamma (Γ)
  • c == Xi (Ξ)
  • d == Phi (Φ)
  • e == Delta (Δ)
  • f == Sigma (Σ)

Substitution:

  • 4 = Psi (Ψ)
  • 6 = Omega (Ω)
  • 42 = 2Θ
  • 62 = ΘA
  • 3Θ = 30
  • 7Θ = 70
  • 5Θ = 50

The ΘΦ pairs are irrelevant, likely put there to confuse decoders. It is possible that there is more to this choice than meets the eye (as with the Douglas Adams reference in 2Θ), as the Greek letters theta (Θ) and phi (Φ) each have symbolic meanings themselves.

The Egyptians used 'theta' to refer to Agathos Daimon, a spirit of vineyards and companionship. It was also used as a symbol for Earth. The Greeks tended to use it as an abbreviation of 'thanatos' (death) and the symbol itself was used as a warning of impending death.

'Phi', however, is a symbol for the Golden Ratio, similar to the Fibonacci Sequence, which is a pattern that appears all around us and is analogous to a god's relationship with creation. It is possible that the choice to use these letters as 'irrelevant' pieces of code was intended to represent the creator (Harold) and his companion (Nathan).

Converted back into ascii text, then decoded through base64, this is:

"Already we had gone away from him,
When I beheld two frozen in one hole,
So that one head a hood was to the other;
And even as bread through hunger is devoured,
The uppermost on the other set his teeth,
There where the brain is to the nape united.
Not in another fashion Tydeus gnawed
The temples of Menalippus in disdain,
Than that one did the skull and the other things.
"O thou, who showest by such bestial sign
Thy hatred against him whom thou art eating,
Tell me the wherefore," said I, "with this compact,
That if thou rightfully of him complain,
In knowing who ye are, and his transgression,
I in the world above repay thee for it,
If that wherewith I speak be not dried up."
His mouth uplifted from his grim repast,
That sinner, wiping it upon the hair
Of the same head that he behind had wasted.
Then he began: "Thou wilt that I renew
The desperate grief, which wrings my heart already
To think of only, ere I speak of it;
But if my words be seed that may bear fruit
Of infamy to the traitor whom I gnaw,
Speaking and weeping shalt thou see together.
I know not who thou art, nor by what mode
Thou hast come down here; but a Florentine
Thou seemest to me truly, when I hear thee.
Thou hast to know I was Count Ugolino,
And this one was Ruggieri the Archbishop;
Now I will tell thee why I am such a neighbour.
That, by e"

This appears to be an excerpt from "Canto XXXII" of Dante's Inferno, which depicts Dante's literary exploration of the journey the soul takes (in this part, recognising and renouncing sin), in order to reach god.

Speculation

Code 15

In Canto XXXII of Dante's Inferno, the narrator discovers a place where sinners are trapped up to their necks in ice. He finds two men who are trapped so close together that one appears to be eating the head of the other. Asking the sinner who he is and why he's chosen to do something so awful, the sinner replies that this man, who he was originally allied with, betrayed him, locking the sinner away and causing his death.

"Trusting in him I was made prisoner / And after put to death" says Ugolino, which could refer to the consequences of Nathan Ingram creating the backdoor into the Machine - ultimately, the both of them became trapped by this choice, that Harold wished to avoid, and it eventually resulted in Harold's "death".

Code 16

It is clear by now that Anthrax is one of the most important references to bioterrorism in these bluescreens, as it has appeared so often. It could be referring to the 2001 Anthrax Attacks, in particular this part, wherein activist Barbara Hatch Rosenberg suggested that the attack might be the work of a "rogue CIA agent," possibly enacted "with the unwitting assistance of a sophisticated government program".

Code 17

Cinderella is a well-known fairytale, but the Brothers Grimm version includes something that most others do not: the sisters cutting off pieces of their foot in order to fit into Cinderella's shoe. The prince doesn't notice, but each time, a little bird tells him to look in the shoe because the women's feet are bleeding.

This version focuses more on the punishment exacted on the sisters, rather than the happy ending. It can be interpreted as a cautionary tale for the foolishness of making great sacrifices in order to illicitly gain something, because in the end, lies never last. In Nathan's words, "the truth always catches up to you, Harold, no matter how hard you try and hide it."

Codes 18 & 19

The next two are markedly different in the events they depict. The report on the 7/7 bombings focuses on terrorist attacks committed against a Western country, whereas the report on My Lai depicts an attack by the West on an Eastern country. It could be said that this is presented to us to serve as a question for what a terrorist attack actually is - if the US kills non-combatants, is it any different from a terrorist attack, just because the country doing the killings happens to be the USA?

Code 20

The final glitch depicts one of the most famous moments of the Iliad, the Battle of Troy, specifically the moment where Achilles, one of greatest warriors of the Greeks, arrives on the shores of Troy but refuses to fight after being dishonoured. As Hector lead the Trojans against the Greek fleet, almost certainly ensuring their destruction, Achilles' closest friend and partner Patroclus puts on Achilles' armour and goes to fight in the guise of Achilles. The Greek soldiers, fired by the sight of Achilles, fight the Trojans back, but before Patroclus can lead a siege on Troy, he is killed by Hector.

Only then does Achilles emerge. Enraged by his grief for Patroclus, he takes to the field and kills many but always continues in search of Hector. Without Patroclus' death, it is likely that Achilles would never have fought back. Likely, this is a reference to Nathan's decision to, with the help of Harold's Machine (his armour), take up arms against those who meant others harm. It has long been theorized that Harold only decided to save the Numbers because of Nathan's death; it is possible that this is foreshadowing that moment.

Conclusion

From these interpretations, it may be possible to conclude that these glitches are hinting not solely towards past events, but to what the Machine may do in future if it is 'set free'. The implication is that it will be free to prevent murder using all of the resources available to it, which are very numerable indeed. If this is the case, the question that we may also need to ask is will the Machine delineate 'terrorism' or 'murder' in the same way that we do? The comparison of the 7/7 bombings and the My Lai massacre perfectly highlights this quandary, and why the American government would be against losing control of the Machine - because it would not be on 'their side' anymore. It also begs the question of whether the Machine, if this occurs, will see its own capability to kill as 'murder' or not. If not, setting it free could effectively bring about a digital dictatorship that would go to any length to protect humanity from itself, including erasing it.
