Hi Obi. Before you continue making any changes to the season overview pages, a few points for you to consider.
The template you're using from the Cast & Character pages doesn't really look good on the season page. How about making a modified template for the season pages where we can add relevant info, such as episode count, better. Also, the boxes should be aligned with the rest of the page, not centered. This may only apply to larger screens, but on my 21.5" the space between each box is too big and makes the whole page look messy and disrupted.
By using cast boxes and ordering them by episode count you're destroying character relationships, such as Elias and Scarface, Garrison and Control, or even Carter and Fusco.
Since this is a season overview which is not episode specific, why do you use character images? Wouldn't it be more appropriate to use actor images there? Also, the lines in the cast boxes should be reversed for the season page. The actor should come first, and then the role.
As usual, and I'm really trying to be patient, but please take a minute and introduce your idea to the admin team first, before you make any bold changes like those. I've asked you that several times in the past already, and it's really starting to bother us. If you're busy with other projects and only drop by occasionally, I get that, but it is not too much to ask to include us other admins, who have been working hard to keep this wiki alive and up to date for so long. Usually we would revert changes like that if they were made by a regular user, and you had me close to reverting your changes on Season 3 earlier because they seemed so out of place.
Please consider the suggestions I've made before making any more changes; or at least discuss your ideas with us first. Otherwise we will make appropriate changes.
I'd like to concur with what Helloclaire is asking. We admins work hard, and collaboratively, to create a shared vision for the wiki, and it's tough, and more than a bit frustrating, to have you suddenly drop in, make sweeping changes without consulting us or even leaving an edit summary, then disappear. It leaves us in a tough spot when we try to enforce a few basic rules of order and to get users to discuss their bold edits when the wiki owner brushes us aside and makes any changes. I was planning to revert it all, but agreed not to out of respect for Helloclaire, and so we can discuss this first.
HC has made the template issue clear, I'm sure. I agree wholeheartedly that the boxes simply don't fit the page. The lists are fine as they are; this is a quick reference page that doesn't demand the elaborate formatting we use on the individual pages. I'd go so far as to argue that the page is much harder to read and to find information quickly when you change from the list format. Perhaps a simple table would be a better option, with cast, not character images.
Like HC, I see no reason to sort by number of episodes. That's a pretty minor piece of data, and I find myself thinking, "Who cares?" Billing and episode count do nothing to help readers understand the cast and characters; they're union esoterica. The cast should be arranged in meaningful clusters so as to allow readers to understand how their characters relate to one another. This isn't an encyclopedia, I'll grant you, but we four work hard to make the wiki as high-quality and user friendly as possible.
I'd also like to draw your attention to one more point. You may have noticed that late last season, Playsonic devoted considerable time and effort to creating a "Samaritan" themed design scheme for the wiki. I noted you recently removed the Samaritan-red table headers on the season pages, and restore the drab tomato red ones with no explanation why. I did note the black type is hard to read through the brighter red, but a simple change to white text would have solved the problem and kept the headings consistent with the design theme. I'm going to change them back with the text change.
Please, Obi, give some thought to what Claire and I said, and work with us rather than against us. We have the utmost respect for you as the founder, but it's tough when we're here day in and day out, trying to build something, only to have our work swept aside with no discussion and no explanation. You tell us that you like what we do, but actions speak louder than words.
I apologize if these edits seemed to be working against you, rather than with you. I thought I had reverted the edits myself and kept them on my sandbox, but it seems like these actions did not go through.
I do highly value your contributions to the wiki, and me being the "founder" carries no weight when it comes to the well-being of the site. I merely started the wiki when the show started and ran it for a bit, but you guys game it the push to really make it stand out. I apologize for the interference.
No apologies needed, Obi. Just drop a message on one of our talk pages or come find us on the IRC channel, and let's explore your ideas together. I like the new seasonal navigation you added to the recurring template!
I'ts been a honour for me to be annointed the "picture bloke" and I continue to enjoy capturing images for the cast members of the episodes as they air. I'm also about half way through my personal project of replacing the cast images for the first season which were done using the videos available at the time which were all stamped with either the CBS logo or the CityTv logo and which were of a low resolution. I'm very happy with the resulting high resolution images we now have access to through the Bluray DVD's.
One of the things that has been troubling me as I've gone through this process is that the older low res and logoed images remain in the system and from time to time people select them for use on other pages, perhaps not realizing that the same image is available in a high res version from the Bluray DVD.
My question for you is whether or not it would be possible for you to allow me the authority to peruse the episode pics for older redundant low res images and permit me to delete them so that they no longer are available for use. 90-95 % of these images are duplicates anyway. I thought of asking an Admin to delete them for me, but the sheer number of images to be deleted is quite daunting and I don't want to take their energies away from the other impressive contributions they regulary make.
I make this request purely in the hopes of continuing to improve the site and whatever decision you make, I will abide by and continue to endevour tirelessly to strive to make this wonderful wiki even better.
Warm Regards and best wishes to you for the new year,
Of course! If you have the time and energy to take part in this endless hunt of low quality pictures, I will supply you with whatever tools you'll need! Would that require you to become an admin, or were you simply asking for permission?
In my research of the matter, it would appear that I would require Admin status in order to delete the photos. However, please know that I would only use said status for the aforementioned project and once completed would voluntarily abdicate the Admin status should you request it.
I really cannot say enough how proud I am of all of you admins. You took this wiki, which was in a fair condition, and elevated it to the levels of Lostpedia (which means, very VERY HIGH). You and all the other contributors helped make this the #1 source to POI, and I couldn't be prouder.
Hey Dan. This is Brandon from Wikia's Community Support Team. I sent you an email last week (titled "Wikia Stars") using the address that's connected with your Wikia account, and I just want to check in to see if you received it. Did you? Thanks!
Could I trouble you to weigh in with your opinon regarding the current qualifications for a recurring character.
We have two separate definitions currently online and it's causing more than a little confusion. There have been some lively debates in chat on the subject, but the matter remains unresolved. The general consensus amongst those present was three speaking appearances, with some limited exceptions.
In the Category section , the definition is two appearences. Whilst in the Portal section the definition is three appeareances with an added caveat that they be speaking roles.
Your thoughts on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
I always viewed it as three speaking appearances or more. Once a character is recurring, they will be considered recurring in future seasons as well. I adopted this classification from Lostpedia and Heroeswiki.
Obi, would you mind communicating with the rest of the Admin team before you make any changes to main page items, such as the poll? I saw you just created a new poll without saving the old one. We've been trying to keep old polls here: http://personofinterest.wikia.com/wiki/Poll because they won't be saved by default and any changes will revert the results to 0. Now that you changed the template content, the old poll is gone.
We would really appreciate if you talked with us from time to time instead instead of just doing your thing. We're in the chat almost every day and I've also offered you other means of communication. Since you haven't activated the email user feature, I can only leave messages on your wall. It would be really nice if you could join us for a group discussion, or leave a message on one of our talk pages to announce any changes or revisions. Thank you.
Hi Obi. Would you mind discussing the change of portrait images on recurring character pages before you make any changes? We've had a few issues with this recently when one user constantly changed character portraits so we admins decided that we would like to discuss any changes as a group first. Unless there really is a better picture, we think that there is no need to update anything. (though in Elias' case I see the point because he's no longer a prisoner)
You are welcome to join our chat when you see that admins or regular users are online. It's a great way to discuss things directly. We also have an admin email address to talk admin matters offsite. I can send you the address if you want. You're a part of the admin group after all. Cheers
Apropos of this, Obi, and please don't think we're ganging up on you, but we agreed to leave the four episode pages blank until after broadcast on the U.S. east coast. We want to be respectful of readers, but especially to slow down editors who want to add to pages based on rumor, speculation, spoiler sites and someone's pictures from the set.
As a result, I've reverted your edit for now, but will restore it after the episode runs on Tuesday. Thanks for understanding.
We all realize you weren't aware of what we'd done. But we do want to be consistent to keep order. When you get a minute, take a peek at my sandbox. We're working on an organizing point for policy and info, modeled on something Claire saw on the Alias wiki.
Hi Obi~ Could you assign rollback rights to Wilem7? He's been doing such a great job with adding images and making the tabs look beautiful but he gets interrupted or reverted by another user from time to time and has to fix it again manually. I would also want to ask you to assign bureaucrat rights to me, if that's alright with you :) I'm here literally every day and well aware of what's going on. And I really care about this wiki. Cheers.
Also, I do think we need to come up with a guideline regarding images. Some of the lead images uploaded by Wilem7 have a strong yellow tint, and at times come in different sizes. I personally believe images should be left untouched, as in, no filtering.
It might have something to do about when we were in the chat discussing the possibility of adding filtered images to represent "only credited" characters or something like that, we normally don't use filtered images elsewhere - but it sounds like a good guideline thing.
Obi-On a very limited number of occassions it is sometimes necessary to adjust the size, brightness and contrast due to the subject matter and the available lighting. In this example from 221, Uni #1 is only on screen for 2.5 seconds and he's literally in the dark the whole time. Additionally, he's in such a tiny portion of the picture that he's nearly invisible. If I posted the unaltered pic, I fear we would be inundated with people crying "That's Reese, you idiot."
You may recall that some weeks ago you and I did discuss the prospect of lightening pictures for effect in extreme situations, and as we agreed I have limited manipulating images to those instances where they are most sorely needed. To my mind, the number of altered images is quite small.
Additionally, I did create a question mark man for the people I just can't find after umpteen viewings, but this is a very small number. Also, Claire, PS2 and I worked on some "placeholder" images for regular cast members who did not appear in an episode but had a credit, mostly poor Fusco.
Of course, I am happily just a guest here and will abide by whatever you decide regarding this issue. Ironically, I'm in the process of completing the pics for 2x22, my very last episode. 51 down and one to go!
Wilem7 (What's your real name? :P), you are not a guest. You are part of a team -- an influential and much needed one. Your say and mine carry the same weight, and I would love for you to stick around for as long as you want! :)
Thank you alll very much, I am honoured to be included in such distinguished company. You are all truly special and it shows in every page of this site. Keep up the good work and I look forward to the future.
Hello there! I'd like to know if this community might be interested in testing out the new VisualEditor option. You may have read some details about how it works on the Community Central forum and on the Help page. You can also check out the feature on the Community Test Wikia!
We'd be interested in enabling it here as soon as next Thursday or Friday, once the option to upload images and add videos has been released. Please let me know if this community might be interested, and if you have any questions or concerns please don't be shy. Thanks!
